2. Make sure you treat your music as a product to promote. Get together your own business plan. Get a marketing plan. Having these things in place will make it easier to show the record label how they can make money with your music. Treat your music as you would if you owned your own business and you had to present a business plan to the bank. That is essentially what you are doing when you meet with a record label.

3. Start the grassroots movement yourself. With the internet, you can get tons of people listening to your music, which will make it easier to get signed. Get your band a website, a Facebook page, a Myspace account, and an account on Itunes. None of these things cost very much, and once you start interacting with people you will get tons of followers. Just think of how great it will look to a record label if you can show them that your music has been listened to by millions of fans on Myspace. There are all kinds of sites and sources for new music, almost a dizzying amount. It’s often hard to know where to start. myspace, blogs, last fm, spotify, we7, pitchfork, stereogum and a whole host of other sites and services are vying for the attention of the music-loving public.

The list I’ve mentioned above is far from exhaustive. For one thing, all of those sites and service types I’ve listed above are entirely legal. In this age of copyright-breaking, however, there are also a load of illegal channels where music fans are getting hold of the songs they want to hear for free. Much to the consternation of the record industry, surveys of music fans has shown that fans don’t attach too much importance to whether they are obeying copyright law or not. What matters most to the average fan with a computer and an internet connection is the ease and the variety of music they can get their hands on.

It’s also interesting that not only are we accessing music in a different way, we are also getting our secondary music information in a different way too.Readership of music magazines is down, and a lot of them have turned into listings sources, rather than the opinion-focussed publications. Magazines like the UK’s Uncut and NME, and America’s Rolling Stone are still working in their original format, but these are often the exceptions. Pay content is finding less and less of an audience. They’re marketting directly to their fans as they always were (the mailing list is nothing new to music), but now it’s easier for an artist to have a direct relationship with a fan at a low level which works better and is more sustainable than being in a traditional record deal, and on is a lot less traumatic than getting onto the standard promotional treadmill.

People still need tastemakers, however. There’s now so much stuff coming at people in a disorganised way. that information overload is all to easy. So people still need to get their information from somewhere. The difference from the traditional model is that this is now coming less and less from official sources, and more from music fans themselves on blogs.

Music blogs are more likely to be the genuine expression of a single fan without any agendas, profit motives or contacts in the music industry to keep happy. Blogs are, at their best, pure opinion, a form of modern internet democracy- fans talking to fans, about the music which they are discovering together, with artists thrown into the mix. This can only be a good thing.
